John Polanyi Collegiate Institute
Ying-Chia (Christina) He is a grade 12 student in the Science, Mathematics, and Robotics (SMR) Program at John Polanyi Collegiate Institute. She has won more than 10 subject awards in her program and a gold medal at her school’s Science Fair. Her academic performance and strong interest in science have helped her earn an internship position at Professor Ebrahim Ghafar-Zadeh’s Biologically Inspired Sensors and Actuators (BioSA) Laboratory at York University. Over the summer, she worked with the BioSA team to develop Smart Clothing gadgets dedicated to athletes and the elderly.
Christina has been highly involved in extracurricular activities. As the President of the non-profit student organization Change Impacting Toronto’s Youth (C.I.T.Y.), Christina has helped launch many projects supporting both local and global causes. Some major projects include a clothing line designed by the team and a charitable silent auction night that fundraised for an international service trip. In the span of six months, her team has raised over $32,000 for this upcoming water-related project in Ecuador.
In her spare time, Christina enjoys playing badminton and swimming. She also serves as a mixer at her church and an audio system operator for her school’s stage crew.
