Canadian Screen Award-nominated Actor, Writer and Producer
Simu Liu is a Canadian Screen Award-nominated actor, writer and producer, best known for his role as Jung on the hit CBC comedy Kim’s Convenience.
Drawing from his own experiences as an immigrant to Canada as a child and his relationship with his parents, Simu’s presentation will discuss the challenges he faced discovering his own possibilities and ultimate success. His presentation will touch upon improving communication between immigrant parents and their Canadian educated children, how immigrant parents can help their kids develop their own possibilities through wiser education and career choices, and the value of maintaining Chinese culture and family upbringing within a Canadian context.
Simu was born in Harbin, China and immigrated to Canada at the age of five. He attended University of Toronto Schools for high school and University of Western Ontario’s Ivey Business School for his degree in finance and accounting. He worked as an accountant at Deloitte but was eventually laid off. This became a turning point in his life, as he explored options and finally found his own life-path in pursuing a career as an actor.
Along with his role in the critically acclaimed Kim’s Convenience, Simu also produces award-winning original content through his production company 4:12 Entertainment, named after the day he was laid off from his job as an accountant.
